Born in 1963 in Los Angeles California Bradford was raised in a large family of artists, writers and actors. Growing up, I thought drawing was something everyone did, and is still something Bradford makes a point to do everyday. While in high school, in Orange County, Bradford created drawings of himself and the other members of a rock band he was in for an album cover. After his big brother saw the finished album he suggested Bradford try selling his drawings. It wasnt until a few years later at age 20 that Bradford took his brother's advise and moved back to Orange County from Hollywood, where he was living with the other band members, to become a full time artist.
Commercial success came quickly, but by his late 20's he felt a need to learn more from the Old Masters. Years of studies followed at Orange Coast College and The Art Institute of Southern California as well as museums in Europe and the United States. In his late 30's Bradford began a more serious series of portraits in oil of other artists, writers, museum curators and collectors titled Orange County Tastemakers. These paintings were eventually collected by museums and universities as well as many other important private collections.
During a period of reflection that followed the 2003 Tastemakers show Bradford felt a need to step back from the art worlds intense machinations. I wanted to get out of my head and just paint the light, so I went out into nature with my easel and sketch book until I saw things that looked like how I felt. While still playing music with his friends and writing songs, Bradford decided he wanted to make quiet paintings. I was interested in finding a way to express a calmness inside myself, a stillness and peace that I was where I should be. I try to bottle these feelings and drop them in the ocean and hope that someone out there will find them.
